Defunkt ontstond in 1978 in New York City als een explosieve mix van punk, funk en jazz. Oprichter en boegbeeld Joseph Bowie, trombonist, zanger en bandleider, bouwde de band uit tot een echte pionier. Bekend om het samensmelten van mainstream grooves met gedurfde, experimentele randjes. Door de jaren heen kende Defunkt wisselende bezettingen en periodes van stilte, maar één ding bleef altijd constant: ‘Mr. Defunkt’ Joe Bowie zelf. Op 11 september zijn ze te bewonderen in PAARD!
